3 HR Must Do's Before Year End!

Employers have many employment law regulations they need to comply with. Make sure you get these items checked off your to-do list:

1.  Harassment Prevention Training.  The EEOC strongly encourages ALL employers to conduct harassment prevention training, and you'll also need a good anti-harassment policy, complaint handling procedure, and investigation process. Many states mandate more frequent training and reporting and provide pamphlets or policies against harassment.  Here is more detail on each state's requirements.

2.  Posters.  Every state has its list of posters, and the federal government requires five (Polygraph Protection, FLSA, FMLA, EEOC, OSHA, and several other industry-specific ones).  State posters are updated frequently, and your state's posters may have changed.  Most posters must be displayed in the work and any hiring location.  Consider how remote employees will access the information.  Here is a list by state provided by i2i Workplace.

3.  Updates to Handbooks.  Do a general review of your handbook since many laws and policies change over time regarding leaves of absence, safety, wage and hour, equal pay, severance agreements, and more.   If you operate in several states, you'll need to be sure you're up on new developments. Work with your employment law attorney to ensure any new laws are reflected in your policies and practices.

Compliance with employment law regulations is essential. If an issue arises, you only have your records to demonstrate a good faith effort towards compliance.
